LiveIntent Design System

“A Practical Approach to Scaling Design and Design Teams.”

THE CHALLENGE

Create and maintain a system for consistently applying UX patterns and principles across all touchpoints of the LiveIntent Platform, built on principled collaboration with stakeholders.

MY ROLE

The size and scope of the product and design organizations at LiveIntent have experienced a lot of fluctuation over the years. In such an environment, values and processes tend to fall out of alignment. With each product and design reorganization, it became increasingly clear that a more systematic way of leveraging knowledge assets would be needed to address the breakdown in communication that often led to inconsistent design, a loss of shared understanding of product, and a frustrating development experience.

I took on the challenge of assessing the needs of stakeholders and worked with product and engineering to revise processes. The resulting LiveIntent Design System is a common language that unifies product, engineering, and design decisions and streamlines the workflow of taking ideas from design to development, allowing stakeholders to concentrate on high value work.

My goal with the design system was not simply to have a Sketch symbol library (although it is very cool) but to change the way stakeholders collaborate with each other in the process.

Overrides

Design for change. With the design system I established a process for changing and introducing new designs to prevent future divergence. This allowed the team to stick to UX guidelines while offering room to experiment.

Optimize towards continuous and frequent usage. A key value proposition to the design system is efficient production workflows for distribution. The system makes creating accurate mockups easy so the team can hash out ideas with confidence.
