THE CHALLENGE

Design the first-ever consumer focused 3D scanner integrated with the MakerBot experience.

MY ROLE

MakerBot was mostly known for its 3D printers when it announced the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner. To make the MakerBot Digitizer marketable, it had to maintain a certain level of quality while remaining as easy to use as MakerBot 3D printers. We paired it with MakerWare for Digitizer, software that takes the complexity out of scanning by offering intuitive preset options.

I was responsible for the design of MakerWare for Digitizer. Working with product managers, computer vision experts, mechanical engineers, and quality assurance engineers, we simplified a complex workflow and set of parameters to a user- centered process without sacrificing too much quality.

Nearly 10k objects scanned with the MakerBot Digitizer have been shared on MakerBot Thingiverse.
